iPhone 3GS VS Nokia N97: A Detailed Comparison

June was a huge month for smartphones. Apple released their new iPhone 3GS and Nokia began shipping their N97 to the North America. Both phones are GSM models and therefore compete with each other in the eyes of the consumer. From price to features, the app store to the camera this video highlights the differences between the two devices allowing you to decide which phone is right for you.

Just a heads up, in terms of voice quality the phones both are very good and therefore didn’t merit a mention in the video.

Palm Pre: Palm strikes back.

I have been a Palm PDA user for many years now, and I have been wanting to upgrade to a smart phone. The Palm offerings like the Centro and Treo’s just didnt have the flash and moderness of the competition like the iPhone and Google phones. So I waited. And I carefully considered switching services. Rumors of a new PalmOS floated around. And then nothing. And still nothing. And PalmOS grew old. And yet my PDA’s still worked fine.

Then, the Palm Pre arrived. I was skeptical. Its linux based.Its based on the open source linux, which makes it quite easy to develop for. Its all web based (I am a web developer). Wow, the perfect phone!

I love my Pre. It syncs my Google Mail with my work’s exchange server into one seamless mail experience. It syncs my calendars too. Fantastic! It multitasks.I can play back music stored in the 8gb built in memory, or stream music online. It does everything I wanted a phone/PDA to do.

Of course, nothing is perfect. It currently does lack Adobe Flash support although that is supposed to be coming (they have Flash on linux in general so I dont see it being much harder to get it to work on the Pre), and it doesn’t have a generic Jabber client (google talk is based on Jabber so I am not sure why they don’t have this yet). The App Store is a little sparse so far, but there is a homebrew apps site with unofficial apps you can install. And the biggest little complaint I have is the battery life, which for me averages about 12 hours.Depending on how you use it, you may want to get the extended life battery.

It also uses any wi-fi connection you might have, seamlessly using it for faster internet access, which also saves on battery time.

Overall, I couldnt be separated from my Pre.The Palm Pre is easy to develop for, its cool, and its on a fast 3G network.

The HTC Hero has a G sensor and a digital compass. Assisted GPS is built in to aid with location based services and navigation. You can easily upgrade the memory capacity of the phone using is microSD slo. Support is built in for the majority phone networks as standard including fast 3G networks. Verifying compatibility with your service provider will provide you with definite information.

The phone operating system is powered by the Google Android system. The open source nature of Android has allowed HTC to build on it with a powerful yet easy to user user interface and home screen. Google Android allows users to develop for the platform and allows users to customize the apps that are on their homescreen. It also allows individuals a seamless experience. Many of the Google apps you enjoy on your computer have Android versions that can be used on the phone. From searching for a location and switching to directions and calling the phone number to less obvious seamless uses.

Straight out of the box the HTC Hero integrates with many of the major social network websites such as Facebook. This allows you to view photo albums that are on friends profiles from your phone. You can also also upload data to your social profiles from this smartphone. It allows you to create a look and function that reflects you and the seamless fact that you are in all of these sites.

You can also find a number of apps available for the Google Android platform. The huge number of smart applications is one of the most exciting things about phones using the Android system. Since the platform is open to individual development and the development of apps for the platform it is likely that individual participation will continue to increase. With the way the HTC Hero and Android is set up your phone is not something that stays the same, it can adapt and update to meet your changing needs and wants. The phone was released recently and costs approx 0 US in the USA and 0 in Australia.
